The Baca National Wildlife Refuge is an amazing place featuring so many amazing natural areas. Come and get back to nature. After moving here the benefit of being able to enjoy the refuge is amazing.

Cannot say enough about the staff with whom we had the fortune to interact.

Formerly a world class working ranch and historically a land grant to the family of Cabeza deVaca the wonders enrich the soul. Bounded by the Great Sand Dunes and Crestone, Co. the refuge is home to extensive Elk populations, Pronghorn, Prairie Dogs, Badger, Deer, and more with reportedly a bear and a large cat or two. Marsh lands and substantial flora provide habitat for avian species. Website provides much greater detail. Colorado endangered and threatened aquatic species surprisingly inhabit the riparian features.

Off the beaten path for those so inclined, this refuge is one of the youngest in the USFWS system (as of this writing) yet boasts history dating prior to Colorado statehood.
