I am reviewing the CMZC after two equally wonderful visits there. If you are interested in learning about Zen Buddhism, this is the place. The staff / monks appear to be completely available to answer any question that you may have. I sat down with several people there who gave me a lot of undivided attention and guidance. The grounds and accommodations are wonderful and incredibly comfortable. It appears that every detail have been well considered. And the FOOD! It is like being at a gourmet restaurant for every meal. I did do some help with meal prep while I was there (completely by choice) and I noted that they use only the freshest ingredients. I plan to go back again and again to this wonderful place. An incredible place led by some incredible people! Thank you Deborah, Lisa and Christian for an incredible experience!
I participated in a weekend sitting in October 2017.
The Crestone Mountain Zen Center is a true gem. I went there for the first time for a weekend seminar and cannot say enough good things about the center. The staff and residents were phenomenal. They were so welcoming and took excellent care of our group. The facilities and land are beautiful. The food was delicious and plenty. It was my first time practicing zazen meditation, and it was a terrific experience with the Zen practitioners welcoming us to practice with them for the morning and evening zen meditations. I highly recommend staying at this special center.
I was there for a month to let go of some of the stress I accumulated over the years. quite frankly this was a little too long. Some takeaways: the staff is really sweet, there's absolutely no pressure to be part of the meditations and lectures (I think I went twice - it just wasn't for me) and the beautiful mountain setting is stunning.
As someone who was fairly new to silent meditation, CMZC blew me away. All the buildings were beautiful, well maintained, and sacred. The processes were very well structured and the food was great. I am going back for the longer Shesshin session only a month later. This place is life changing.
CMZC is a wonderful place to visit. I lived there for 3 years and go back several times a year to do retreats. You can join the monastic practice schedule or go as a guest and do your own retreat, or a combination of the two. The food (all vegetarian) is outstanding - a great place to eat, and a fun place to learn about vegetarian cooking! The Zen programs vary in intensity from fairly low-key seminars to very intense weeklong retreats and 'Wild Dharma' backpacking retreats (see photo) - if you're a beginner, call the center to find out a good way to start.
